Bandwidth aggregation mode
The gateway uses all the WAN ports to send and receive Internet packets. It monitors each WAN port to detect network failure and reroutes Internet traffic over active ports. The system automatically detects dead route re-activation and switch back the gateway into bonded bandwidth aggregator.
This mode is typically used to replace expensive T1, dual and triple bonded T1 lines with a much cheaper DSL or cable modem connection. The savings are staggering since one T1 line cost on average $400/month, 2 T1 lines $800/month and 3 T1 lines cost $1200/month. The average cost for a business DSL line is $75/month. 3 DSL lines cost on average $225/month compared to $1200/month for the 3 T1.
Connection auto fail over mode
The gateway routes the Internet traffic over the main WAN connection. When a network failure occur over the main WAN connection the gateway automatically reroute the Internet traffic over the auxiliary wan connections as a backup. The gateway keeps monitoring the main WAN connection and waits for it to comeback up and operational, once operational the Internet traffic is rerouted over the main WAN connection.
This mode is typically used with a DSL and a satellite connection combined. The satellite connection is usually very expensive and the usage is metered (you pay per bytes used). In this mode, the satellite connection is treated as an auxiliary backup WAN connection and only used when the DSL or cable modem is inaccessible. DSL or cable modem connection are much cheaper and seldom metered, once connectivity is re-established, satellite connection reverts to being a backup connection.
The new gateway comes in two models:
Dual bonded and Triple bonded.
